CafeScribe | eTextbooks, Part III

CafeScribe, powered by Follett, is another eTextbook source that I'll be considering this fall. According to CafeScribe, there are four major perks to utilizing electronic textbooks.

Find it Fast: You can search for terms not only in the text of your eTextbook, but also in the margin notes. Plus, you can highlight and color-code important text.

Study Smart: CafeScribe includes a social networking function. You can share documents, notes, and insights with a student down the hall or across the Atlantic. You can subscribe to other users' notes and receive feedback on papers before you have to turn them in.

Travel Light: Say goodbye to hauling heavy textbooks across campus. Say hello to storing everything on your portable laptop.

Conserve Resources: eTextbooks not only save trees, but also save on the fuels that are needed for the production, manufacture, and transportation of regular books. And since CafeScribe's textbooks cost less than print textbooks to manufacture and distribute, you'll also generally pay less for eTextbooks from CafeScribe.

Other facts about CafeScribe:

  • In most cases, you can print up to 30% of a book's content.
  • The "AutoSummary" feature allows you to view all the notes you've taken throughout a book, print them out, and use them for reference.
  • You can run the entire application and eTextbooks from a USB drive.
  • The "Try Now, Buy Later" option allows you to experience CafeScribe digital textbooks for free before you commit to purchase. (Seven days.)
  • You can access material any time on up to three computers.
  • There is a "text to speech" feature that reads to you.
  • Aaaand... Once you buy from Follett's CafeScribe, the eTextbook is yours to keep.

I really like the social networking feature of CafeScribe. It's definitely a technologically savvy approach to the old-fashioned study group. Think of it... in the wintertime, instead of having to trudge four blocks in snow to the library to meet up with your study group, you can just log on, share notes, and discuss insights using MyScribe.

I searched for a couple textbooks that I'm using this summer, but it was without success. However, CafeScribe is rapidly growing and working with major textbook providers to make ready a larger variety of textbooks. So I'm definitely checking back again in the fall.
