I found another teeny-tiny space in this year's Apartment Therapy Small Cool Contest. It's an itsy-bitsy 500-square-foot studio belonging to Julie in Washington, D.C. As many efficiency dwellers do, Julie faced the challenge of deciding whether she wanted her space to function mainly as a bedroom or living room.
Since she loves entertaining, she found a clever way to balance the two. By giving up a large bed in lieu of a twin-size daybed, she's able to have friends over without them realizing they're hanging out in her bedroom.

During the day and when friends aren't around, she stores her bedding in the damask ottoman that doubles as a coffee table. A large, black, sleek tray keep magazines and remotes organized and easy to move. She diy'ed that patterned lampshade, by the way. Julie also stuck to a mostly black and white color scheme so that she could really play up the beautiful robin's egg blue color of the living space. The crisp white furniture feels so fresh. And I love the pop of springtime color that the pink floral and green pillows give to the daybed. She got creative with do-it-herself projects and Craigslist find makeovers so that she could afford to splurge on that gorgeous West Elm daybed.
The black and white furniture and accessories carry over into the kitchen, which is painted a bright and cheery canary yellow. I love the intimate dining table and seating. The table was a $25 Craigslist find that she painted black and topped with a piece of glass. The window is seriously pretty with the sweet glass bottles---and it lets in such great light!
This floor plan goes to show just how small Julie's space really is---and the awkward angle of the living room that she was able to work around. Love her studio? There are a few more photos of it on the original Small Cool 2012 post. Plus, I think she deserves some of your votes. ;)
