Gift Basket Idea: Apartment Warming

Perhaps your roomie is striking out on her own next semester. Maybe your friend is moving in with her boyfriend. Or your sister is getting her first place all her own. This gift basket is to help make your newly independent dweller make her apartment feel more like home. Don't be overwhelmed by the thought of helping someone decorate. You needn't know their personal decor taste - and even if you do, resist the urge to go overboard. You might get it wrong or she might want to change up her interior design style. Instead, stick with simple design and neutral colors that can seamlessly blend into any decor.

I started with the great burlap storage bin. If your recipient is into touches of the industrial or vintage, she can proudly display it as storage for magazines, fashion accessories, or other sundry daily items. If it's not her style, it still makes for a great bin to stow away toiletries, office supplies, bath and body products, etc.

Fill the basket with things that lend comfort, luxury, and a little style to a new residence. A wall hook is versatile enough to be used for hanging jewelry, keys, scarves, purses, and more. A cozy blanket will always find a place on the couch, in a chair, or at the foot of the bed. Every apartment needs something for the bare naked walls - a simple, typographic print featuring your recipient's initial will fit just about anywhere. You can't go wrong with a deliciously-scented candle. And I also love the idea of throwing in a decorating book to give your solo nester some design ideas and inspiration.

What makes your apartment feel like a home?

DIY Cat Barrier for Under $100 (See-Through, Climb-Proof, and Too-Tall-To-Jump)

ICYMI: I gave up Cotton after deciding that after trying so many things, my two adopted cats Dahlia and Cotton were just never going to get along. Long story short: I missed her. And Cotton's back. And Dahlia's not going anywhere. My heart is big enough to keep trying. And my apartment is big enough that if I need to keep them separated long term (or permanently), it can be done.
I'm going to write-up a separate post about some of the solutions I've tried, how they worked, who they worked on, and what I'll be trying next. But in this post, I wanted to share the main 'piece de resistance' of having both cats in my apartment: an un-climbable, un-jumpable, see-through barrier to separate Cotton and Dahlia.

Aniela, a lovely reader from Germany, sent me an email requesting advice on recreating the style of Penny's apartment on Big Bang Theory.

Blair's Room | Gossip Girl Decor

Manhattan's debutante Blair Waldorf happens to be my favorite Gossip Girl character.  Her behavior and feelings vary from snobbish to sensitive, but she always (except for a few rare occasions) looks and acts totally pulled together.  Her luxurious bedroom is fit for a queen---and is as pulled together as her preppy fashion ensembles.
